Fun with Apples

Well it is fall and one family tradition we have is to go apple picking. We have a local apple farm that we visit every year. We pick our own apples, a half bushel worth.

Normally we wait until later in October to go but this year we went early. Boy was it a great idea, it was so much easier to pick apples. The trees were so full! Even my 2-year-old was able to walk up to the tree and pull apples off.

So we came home and made applesauce.

Then once i have my unsweetened applesauce I make applebutter. Whatever applesauce is left over after the applebutter is made is then canned to eat later on.

I do the crockpot method for applebutter.

I put 2 cups of sugar, 2 tbsp. cinnamon, 1 tsp cloves, 1/2 tsp allspice, then fill to 1″ of the top.

Cook on low at least over night. I normally try to cook it on low for at least 18 hours. Stir every once in a while to avoid burning. While it is cooking you need to make sure the top is vented. I wrapped two paint stir sticks in foil and use those to hold my lid up.

The applebutter will have cooked down over night.

You then add two more cups of sugar and more applesauce to bring back up to the height it was to begin with.

I prefer a smooth applebutter so I use my immersion blender until it is as smooth as I want. Once it gets hot again you can ladle into jars and process accordingly.

27 4oz jars for gifting and 3 8oz jars for us.

Happy Fall Ya’ll!
